Some of the biggest names in the adrenalin-fuelled world of extreme action sports are set to fight it out over four days as GAS returns to the 2013 Goodwood Festival of Speed and Moving Motor Show (11-14 July 2013).

BMX flatland champion Viki Gomez from Spain recently joined 12-time world trials champion Dougie Lampkin as the pair showcased their skills at the Goodwood Motorsport Preview. The Preview Day launched Goodwood’s motorsport season and Gomez and Lampkin were there to promote the GAS (Goodwood Action Sports) zone at the globally renowned Festival of Speed. The Festival is the biggest event of its type in the world and this year will celebrate its 20th anniversary.

GAS brings together a selection of the world’s leading action sport stars for four days of jaw-dropping freestyle motocross accompanied by BMX dirt, high jump and flatland action as well as motorcycle and mountain bike trials.

Since its Festival of Speed debut in 2011, GAS has played host to huge names including Thomas Pages, Robbie Maddison, Kye Forte, Danny MacAskill and the late Eigo Sato and in 2013 organisers are not holding back as up to 20 of the world’s leading action sports athletes prepare for battle.

More than 7,000 tonnes of soil will be used to sculpt the BMX and FMX dirt jumps and landings that make up the GAS zone and six ramps will throw freestyle motocross riders high above the West Sussex countryside.

There will be two shows per day from Thursday to Sunday with an extra FMX Best Trick contest at the end of each day. On top of this Lampkin is shaping up to take on Chris Doney and Martyn Ashton in a series of showdowns as motorcycle trials goes head-to-head with mountain bike trials.

The full line-up of extreme sport GAS athletes for the 2013 Festival of Speed will be announced over the coming weeks and months, but the roll call of past masters at the Festival has included the legendary Japanese FMX jumper Eigo Sato, who sadly was killed practicing back flips at home very recently. Swede Fredrik Berggren has also been here in action alongside Brody Wilson from the USA, Czechs Petr Pilat and Libor ‘Ninja’ Podmol, plus German Hannes Ackermann and his 14-year-old back flipping brother Luc, as well as Brits Jamie Squibb and Dave Wiggins.

Jamie not only performed at GAS in 2012, but he also helped to construct the course that includes five huge jumps – each built from around 1,000 tons of dirt, trucked in especially for the event, sharing the digger-driving duties with two-time BMX world champion Kye Forte. Kye won the coveted World Dirt Jump title in 2005 and followed that up with the World BMX Masters title.

As well as helping to construct the massive course for GAS and the dirt jump demos that will take place between the BMX races at the London Olympics, Kye will also be taking centre stage at Goodwood as he heads up the BMX riders alongside brother Leo, Matt Priest and Ben Wallace.

Goodwood favourite Dougie Lampkin was joined in 2012 by fellow Brits James Dabill, Alexz Wigg and Jack Sheppard while their pedal-powered counterparts comprised of home-grown heroes Martyn Ashton and Chris Doney, plus Zimbabwean Blake Samson.

All-new for 2013 will be the GAS Experience Zone aimed at setting first-timers loose on two wheels through a series of petrol, battery and pedal-powered experiences catering for all ages.

With a huge fleet of bikes, safety kit and the country’s leading instructors on hand throughout each day of the Festival, the GAS Experience Zone represents arguably the UK’s biggest ever opportunity to get active on two wheels.

When GAS debuted in 2011, it was an instant hit, much acclaimed by the 185,000+ enthusiastic spectators that attend the Festival of Speed. The GAS concept is a simple one – take five different action sports, hand-pick some of the most accomplished riders in the world and put them together in one purpose-built arena. The result is an amazing spectacle that has to be seen to be believed.

Five GAS disciplines at Goodwood will mix petrol and pedal-power, with jaw-dropping freestyle motocross sharing airspace with BMX dirt jumping, while a little closer to terra firma the stars of motorcycle trials, mountain bike trials and BMX flatland will demonstrate an almost supernatural sense of balance and inch-perfect precision.
