Yamaha has just taken the wraps off the all-new YZF-R1 superbike at the EICMA Motorcycle Expo in Milan, Italy, along with a slightly upgraded variant dubbed the R1M. MotoGP legends Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo were there for the event as well, which Yamaha is calling “the most MotoGP-inspired motorcycle ever”.

We’ve seen mostly European contenders stealing the limelight in the past few years, the likes of the BMW S1000RR, MV Agusta F4 and Ducati Panigale going all out to top the horsepower stakes. It was only this year that Kawasaki came out with the mad H2R, a 1000cc supercharged track-only rocketship that belts out a staggering 300 horsepower. A roadgoing H2 is expected soon with 200hp, putting it in the same ballpark with the Europeans. On that same note, the 2015 Yamaha YZF-R1 doesn’t disappoint, making a claimed 200 crank horsepower and 112.4Nm of torque from its 998cc inline-four. Tipping the scales at just under 200kg, the new R1 features fully-adjustable KYB suspension front and rear, 320mm brake discs with 4-piston radial callipers, 120/70/17 rubber at the front, and 200/55/17 at the back.

The MotoGP-inspired electronics include a six-axis “Inertial Measurement Unit” that uses gyros and accelerometers to measure pitch, roll, yaw, and acceleration from front to back, left to right and up to down. This unit communicates with the Yamaha Ride Control ECU to provide data for rider assist, safety and go-fast features including:

Adjustable and user-programmable power delivery modes
Lean angle sensitive traction control
4-stage slide control to manage powerslides
4-stage lift control to dial in your maximum wheelie settings
Full-throttle launch control
Quickshifter for upshifts only
Slipper clutch to keep the rear from losing traction on high-rpm downshifts
Linked ABS braking designed to help keep the rear down under hard braking

The higher-spec R1M shares most of the R1’s goodies, but replaces some of the bodywork with carbon-fibre for increased weight savings, along with a fully electronic, active Öhlins suspension that takes data from the IMU on speed, attitude, lean angle, acceleration and brake pressure in order to constantly update rebound and compression damping for the ideal ride. The other highlight is an advanced datalogging GPS system that communicates via WiFi with an iOS or Android app to give riders a wide range of data about the track season they’ve just completed, including the ability to make settings changes to re-upload back to the R1M.
