The New Brough Superior SS100
Brough Superior has a legendary design ethos, immediately recognisable at first glance. Emanating from the ‘20’s and ‘30’s – the golden age of motorcycling – George Brough’s timeless format has become a reference point of two-wheeled design.
The creative direction for the new SS100 is clearly an evocation of this, as represented for example by the trademark shape of the fuel tank, and the minimalist simplicity with which the marque’s technical refinement is presented. The classic Super Sport DNA of the historic SS100 is immediately evident, especially as regards the riding position, engine performance and use of high-tech components. Observe how the avantgarde front suspension system and the doubled-up small diameter brake discs present a neo-classical appearance combined with leading edge performance.
The new SS100’s design and engineering have been undertaken in collaboration with Boxer Design, representing the fulfilment of an ambition for Boxer’s founder Thierry Henriette. The members of the Boxer Design team are all classic motorcycle enthusiasts, and have always considered the Brough Superior SS100 as the best bike ever made in the context of its era. It has been a privilege for them to work on relaunching the Brough Superior brand by creating this motorcycle, and to meet the challenge of delivering the best of both worlds – classical tradition conveyed in a modern context.
V-Twin Engine
The new SS100 is built around a 997cc V-twin engine that was specifically designed for this motorcycle. The product of a collaboration between Boxer Design and Akira Engineering, it finally achieves George Brough’s dream of creating a Brough Superior SS100 fitted with its own bespoke engine – an 88° V-twin with its cylinders integrated into a horizontally-split semi-dry sump crankcase. This engine is designed to deliver thrills and performance throughout the rev band, since as a bespoke engine it can be tuned to deliver anywhere from 100bhp to 140bhp, depending on engine mapping and customer choice.
Front fork
The double wishbone front suspension has been chosen by Brough Superior for its superior technical advantages, which separate braking and steering to offer increased precision and enhanced comfort on any kind of road. The front fork system is made from top-level materials, including aluminium- magnesium alloy for the fork legs, and titanium for the triangular links.
Chassis
The V-twin engine has been designed as the main structural chassis component, comprising the link between the front and rear suspension systems. This concept allows the engine to be in full view, as well as providing exceptional lightness and stiffness. The vestigial steel frame is thus reduced in size to the minimum, and other structural components such as the seat subframe are made from titanium tubing to further reduce weight. The swingarm made from an aluminium-magnesium alloy is fitted with a progressive link rear suspension system, with damping provided by a fully adjustable Öhlins shock.
Four-disc CMM brake system
The new Brough Superior SS100 has an outstanding brake system supplied by Beringer. This high-tech four-disc ceramic brake system combines top level performance and innovative design with reduced visual proportions better suited to the SS100’s neo-classical design, in keeping with simulating the appearance of an old-style drum brake. The main technical advantages of the 4D CMM AEROTEC system are to minimise its gyroscopic effect on the steering, as well as reduce unsprung weight, while at the same time increasing brake power.
