Indian Motorcycle has announced the winners of its inaugural ‘Project Scout: Build a Legend’ custom program. The program kicked off on November 30 and was open to Indian Motorcycle dealers around the world, giving their teams a global stage from which to showcase their design and customisation talent. With minimal rules, dealers were free to customise a 2016 Indian Scout using any theme, style or budget they chose as long as it incorporated at least three genuine Indian Scout accessories from the current catalogue of more than 200 items. In all, 35 dealers participated in the contest worldwide, and on January 8 each of them submitted final photos of their custom creations. The final submissions were published and shared on Indian Motorcycle’s website and social media profiles on January 18 and fans cast votes for their favourites up until February 19. On February 20 the top three finalists were announced and each finalist was given an all-expense-paid trip to the 75th annual Daytona Bike Week for themselves plus a guest.

Top Winner – ‘Boardtracker’
This bike is a tribute to the legendary Scout who used to race on Board track. White tyres mounted on 26″ wheels gives an antique look to this historic motorcycle. Cope pipes and wood imitation seat recall the 1920 – 1927 models. The footrest, number plate and handle are worked in high quality white oak.

Fan Favourite – ‘Fusion’
Described as the best of yesterday and today, the Fusion blends key essentials of Indian motorcycles from over 70 years apart. With the team having a deep respect for what the brand was and is, the goal was to utilize the bones of the Spirit Lake machine and add memorable and recognizable elements of a bygone era. The concept for the design was to attract a new and unique audience that appreciates the incredible performance of today’s 100hp machine, while carefully paying tribute to the DNA of the iconic Indian Scout.

Builders Choice Award – ‘Ol #71’
‘Ol #71’ is a tribute to one of the greats, two time AMA National Champion and Indian Wrecking Crew racer, Bobby Hill. The inspiration for this Project Scout came from the winning tradition that Bobby Hill created in the late 1940s through the 1950s. Not only is the custom Scout reminiscent of Bobby’s bike with its two-tone paint scheme and coloured headdress, Bobby himself put his own personal touch on this beauty. You’ll notice the sprung seat with copper springs and matching distressed leather fender pad, vintage-style flat track handle bars and of course, number plates with the iconic #71. Bobby also shared a lot of details with the team from Heritage Indian Motorcycle of Northwest Arkansas that has been incorporated into the build, including gold pinstripe on the fuel tank, and 18″ wheels fitted with Firestone rubber. The front end, frame and swing arm have been painted to resemble his winning bike. Other highlights include a staggered and offset custom dual exhaust, copper plated rear shock springs, custom fabbed front and rear fenders, and vintage left side air cleaner.
